How much of Oppo is biracial or mixed race? Have a pretty topical Slash for your time.
If you feel awkward saying hello, no shame. I’m just curious.
Breaking the ice, I’m a white guy, who people seem to often think is Jewish (and very occasionally, Hispanic?), but I guess that vague “other sort of white” look is from being 1/4 Turk and 1/8 (Central) Asian. And I have a lot of mixed family. I don’t really talk about it much, and I feel most people who are also don’t talk about it much, which is why I’m curious to see if maybe there’s a bunch of mixed people here. If there are, then great.

I’m 1/4 Puerto Rican. I got that fiery Latin blood in me. Rest of me is different types of white though.

Not by the arbitrary standards of race we use in this country.

Southern surfer transplanted to the heartland of French, Irish, English, Scottish and German background. So dude, I’m an American of middle European Anglo Saxon heritage with a bad Midwestern accent. I don’t get to check any extra boxes on any government forms.

Yeah, I fit that bill too. A hundred years ago, they’d be throwing me outta ‘classy’ establishments. Now I’m just boring.

Nope. Several generations back gave me a Cherokee great-great-great-great-grandmother though. But one side of my family is of German descent, the other side of English descent.

All I can give is a Frank Zappa quote from “ Trouble Every Day ”:
“ You know people, I’m not black, but there’s a whole lotsa times I wish I could say I’m not white. ”

Okay, as my black friends jokingly say, I’m a cracker.

But at least he wasn’t anglo-saxon.

As far as I can trace back I’m white British, so probably of Roman/Norman/Saxon/Viking/anyone else who invaded in the past 2000 years or further.

Varying degrees of whiteness? Not sure about that. Once you reach a certain point of removal from whatever diversity occurred in your lineage it’s kind of irrelevant. I’m almost completely German as far as I know, so I can’t claim shit.

It’s not so much a thing anymore, as white Americans have become pretty thouroughly assimilated. A few decades ago it wasn’t quite the same story, and WASPs definitely had an edge over other white people. Zappa himself would admit as much by joking about his big nose and black hair, but mostly I was just reminded of something W.E.B. DuBois said about his white ancestry, that he was glad none of them were anglo-saxons.
As for being removed from ancestry, it’s an interesting, intricate subject. Because you’re talking about genetics and culture. I know people who’re “Japanese” but their families have lived in America for generations, and none of them have ever been to Japan. On the other hand I have a friend who is part Japanese but was raised and now works in Japan. Who’s more Japanese then?

As someone mixed, I just want to point out how funny it is to me that the media latched on to the term “biracial” as the PC term for mixed when Obama first ran for president. I don’t consider asking about race impolite and I get that question often when I first meet people.
Also C2 is best ‘vette.

This is a good point, since, if someone can be biracial, then triracial, quadracial, etc. are all equally valid terms. Does that make me monoracial? That just sounds lame and bad. Uniracial, perhaps?
I think variety is the spice of life, and think we should value and celebrate our heritage and differences (to a point), but I’m looking forward to the day when we all just look at each other as human.

I’m a quarter native American (Chippewa), and three-quarters all the races that oppressed native Americans.
Sometimes I can be a little hard on myself.
